Our Simulation Learning Program is accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Since its inauguration, health professionals in Montfort, as well as medical students / residents and other health professionals have been able to improve their knowledge thanks to the various techniques and simulation technologies we offer.
Clinical immersion through the use of high fidelity androids; virtual reality; large scale simulation; Healthcare professionals and students who choose ISM and Montfort for their training will benefit from state-of-the-art technology for developing and upgrading their skills.
The Simulation Lab, a state-of-the-art tool for ISM’s training, replicates hundreds of “as in real life practice” scenarios to turn our learners into professionals, that will be ready for any eventuality.
The ISM offers an average of 400 training sessions per year, “as in real life practice” of operation, emergency, obstetrics, neonatology or intensive care. Depending on the context, learners practice their skills on synthetic simulators or even patient-actors. Debriefing sessions are then planned in rooms that are designed for this purpose.
The simulation sessions, at the ISM, promote interprofessional relationships, since they bring together members from different teams around the same scenario, “as in real life practice”. Thus, the exercise also improves the communication skills necessary for interprofessional cohesion.
Learners work with state-of-the-art models; SimMan3G, Nursing Ann, SimNewB, SimMom and our ACLS models. They all offer their electronic body to science!
To meet the needs of learners, we have a vast inventory of drugs and medical equipment “as in real life practice” to better simulate any intervention needed.
Montfort has been offering medical education for over half a century. In fact, it has been since the inauguration of the Hospital in 1953. In 1954, the Sisters of Wisdom, founders of the Hospital, received their first residents and interns. Interestingly enough: at that time, the use of simulated patients was already common practice in medical training.
The Education Service was established in 1967 with the mandate of guiding and assisting the adult learner on their learning journey. We were already offering advanced courses adapted to the area of expertise of some learners.
It was in 1974 that the Department of Education developed the concept of continuing education for all employees. The goal was, and still is, to enhance skills and abilities on a larger scale by facilitating access to knowledge.
On September 15 and 16, 1978, Montfort celebrated its 25th anniversary by instituting its first JM. They were then called “Journées médicale de Montfort”, and brought together, around the theme “Know how to live and grow old”, 12 doctors-lecturers. However, more specifically, they were presenting the most recent information regarding geriatrics and gerontology, diseases of civilization and preventive medicine. This first event was all under the leadership of Dr. Thomas Dufour father and the Minister of National Health and Social Welfare of the time, Ms. Monique Bégin.
It was March 24th, 2017, that the Institut du Savoir Montfort (ISM) was officially inaugurated. Since then, the professional development became one of the ISM’s three niches of excellence. The Continuing Professional Development niche is better known by its acronym DPC. The ISM, through its DPC niche, is therefore responsible for the training offered to all Montfort employees, as well as to all Francophone professionals who work in healthcare across the province, and who wish to avail themselves of the best services.
